EnergyPlus has a utility that automatically acquires the
geometry of spaces, walls, windows, doors, floors, and
roofs from an IFC data file (International Alliance for
Interoperability standardized format for sharing information
among building software) and generates an EnergyPlus
input data file (IDF) containing this building geometry.
IFC-compliant files can be created by:
Autodesk Architectural Desktop
Bentley Microstation
Graphisoft ArchiCAD
Nemetschek ALLPLAN
Timberline Cost Estimating Software
among others...
Complete list of IFC-compliant programs available on
the IAI implementers web site:
http://www.bauwesen.fh-muenchen.de/iai/ImplementationOverview.htm

General question for the list:
What is the latest progress and developments on the subject of integrating
architectural CAD drawings of building shell into hourly energy modeling
programs like DOE2 or EPlus?
Are there software interfaces out there that have gotten this down to a
usable product, or are we still a few years out?
What are the obstacles to implementing this? Any success stories that
people care to share? Any specific products that people have used?
Thanks!
Sincerely,
Alec Stevens, PE, LEED AP
