[BLDG-SIM] Chilled Beams and eQUEST

Ryan,

If the chilled beams are in fact active, these approaches may work well,
since they are essentially terminal cooling coils with no terminal fan. IF
you are interested in optimizing performance related to thermal comfort,
however, you'll need to seek other tools, since eQuest is obviously not
explicitly accounting for the radiant cooling effect that chilled beams
include to one degree or another.

Also, if you are considering passive chilled beams (radiant panels with fins
or slots to increase convective cooling, but no direct coupling to
mechanically driven supply airflow), you'll need to be sure to account for
the appropriate cooling capacity given the anticipated beam-to-air delta-T
for the application and no mechanically driven airflow.

FYI: There are plans afoot and some groundwork laid to create a radiant
cooling model within eQuest. Pending funding (presently the significant
unknown, but watch this space), the idea will be to include a simple radiant
cooling terminal unit that can be used with any of the airside systems (much
the way baseboard heaters can be added in version 3.6). While the details
are far from being hammered out, it is possible that this could include
means of adjusting for the degree of convective interaction with room air,
air passively drawn from the return plenum (as would be the case for the
"chilled sails" from Price when used in a T-bar grid with DOAS), or SA from
a central air handler.

Best of luck,

You can use induction units to simulate a chilled beam system but you might
also need to configure a seperate (or secondary) warmer chilled-water loop
and cooler hot-water loop for the zonal coils. You might also need to check
the induced ratio to scale the capacity of the primary air delivery and the
secondary induced air component.

Hope this helps.
