[Bldg-sim] bldg sim- shading on adjacent buildings

Thanks Kim and all who replied!



If shading from adjacent buildings prevents us from receiving credit for
PV panels and daylighting, we should be able to get credit for heat gain
reduction. 

 

I think we are submitting a CIR for this...

Since you asked for opinions, here is my 2 cents:

 

With the self-shading, the building could be designed such that there is
no self-shading OR it could be designed such that there is. So, because
both are possibilities you are allowed to take credit for self-shading
because you chose a more efficient building design.

 

With existing adjacent buildings, it is quite possible that any building
you design will be shaded. Thus, it does not make sense to be able to
take credit for this because any baseline building would also be shaded
- the building shading is constant. On the other hand, if part of the
lot you are building on is un-shaded by adjacent buildings and you have
a choice between placing the building in the shadow of the adjacent
buildings or placing it outside the shadow, then I would say you could
take the credit.

 

Perhaps this would make a good CIR.
