[Bldg-sim] Bldg-sim Digest, Vol 61, Issue 17

Hi Geoff,
I have a detailed 10 zone single family dwelling model, which has been calibrated to measured data. It only takes about 8 minutes to run, so I'm not sure if this qualifies as large scale. In my opinion, even at this scale faster simulation times would be useful (especially for parametric analysis). Let me know if you are interested.

Subject: [Bldg-sim] Need 'realistic' Building Models for E+

Hi Bldg-sim community,
I am currently doing some work on EnergyPlus with the goal of speeding it up. My background is in Computer Science.
I'm looking for realistic models that I can input to E+ to help me understand the areas that need improvement and to better focus my efforts.

Do any of you have any large scale / realistic inputs for EnergyPlus that I could use? I will keep them confidential within the E+ development team.

Many thanks --

    Varkie,

I think Geof is interested only in EnergyPlus building models, while
yours are all in DOE-2.1E. However, I do applaud your willingness
    to share publicly such work.

As a secondary note, I do have a doe2ep program that can translate
DOE-2.1E inputs to EnergyPlus 1.4. Anyone interested can e-mail
    me.

Geof, There’s the PNNL ASHRAE model set that you could reference: http://www.energycodes.gov/development/commercial/90.1_models My opinion: I did take a look at this around 6 months ago and the model EUI results seemed a little low, but it’s a great resource nonetheless. Geof, I agree with Vikram that the PNNL models are a useful resource. A similar set of models (the DOE commercial reference buildings) is also publicly available here: http://www1.eere.energy.gov/buildings/commercial/ref_buildings.html Since the models are similar, you might wonder why I suggested these. The reason is that some of the system types change between the new construction (per ASHRAE 90.1-2004) models and the existing building (“post1980” and “pre1980” construction) models, so this would give you a broader set of models. Also, the lighting power is higher, and the infiltration is much higher for these existing building models. This can sometimes make the simulations different enough (warm-up time, HVAC iterations, etc.) that you might want to check with these existing building models, too. If you don’t want to look at all of them, then you may just want to do pre1980 in a few cities. Enjoy!
