Thanks for your help. Will look to DXF situation further

Not directly. And that avenue would have several pitfalls that are not
easily overcome. The DXF format is really just a drawing/display format
which has none of the "intelligence" of the drawing object (i.e. walls,
roofs, windows and the attributes thereof including zone membership). In
addition, EnergyPlus needs the 3D coordinates in a particular order or it
can't resolve the orientation of the surface correctly -- the DXF version
could have the coordinates in several different "orders".

If you have a DXF representation of the building, what you could do is
import it into another program (such as CAD) that has the capability for
producing IFC files which then could go through the IFCtoIDF feature that
is included with EnergyPlus. This filter resolves many of the issues that
are inherent in the drawing packages. Another option (that I know of --
there may be several) is the Square One product (www.squ1.com) can import
DXF files into its product AND can product EnergyPlus IDF files. (No
guarantee implied -- we have not tested this capability extensively).

This probably depends on your warning messages you are receiving. Usually,
if EnergyPlus has big problems it will tag them as "severe" and/or
terminate the program. You could also do some sensitivity studies to see
the impacts between the two options.
