[EnergyPlus_Support] dimensions of building

Dear all,
       I have gone through the Input/Output Documentation regarding ceiling height of zone and volume  of zone. As far as I understood if the value attributed to zone ceiling height and zone volume is 0 or +ve, then E+ automatically calculates the cieling height & volume and uses these in subsequent calculations.
     
      1. is my understanding correct?
      2. How can E+ calculates ceiling height & zone volume without us inputting any dimensions. I can't see  anywhere throughout the input file  where we input dimensions.
