There is no need to switch to regular-R materials.  In fact, it is better to 
use at least some materials which are material:regular.  Did you shut off the 
sun (clearness = 0.0 in the design day objects)?

Beyond that, I need to see the input files to suggest anything further.  Upload 
to the files are in the yahoo group or send as zipped attachment to energyplus-
support@xxxxxxxx
