Re: [EnergyPlus_Support] "DOE2Translator"

Several comments on the DOE-2 translator under discussion, assuming that
it's the one I've worked on for 2 years:
1) it translates from DOE-2.1E, not from EQuest/DOE-2.2. The BDL is
divergent enough between the two to make the DOE2 translator fail on DOE-2.2
files. Furthermore, since the DOE-2 translator is actually a modified
version of DOE-2.1E, creating a translator for EQuest/DOE-2.2 would require
recoding the DOE-2.2 source code, which would require substantial effort as
well as cooperation with the developer of EQuest/DOE-2.2.
2) the DOE-2 translator converts the geometry only for walls defined with
HEIGHT and WIDTH. Walls defined in DOE-2 with AREA will generate a surface
with all the vertices at the origin, resulting in numerous EnergyPlus
warnings and fatal errors. This problem of translating non-geometrically
described walls was probably the first issue we explored in developing the
DOE-2 translator. We discussed numerous methods to "intuite" the wall
geometry, e.g., divide its area by the zone height to get its dimensions,
guess its orientation by finding the relative positions of the two spaces
(or zones), etc., but all these are just educated guesses that are prone to
fail in specific cases. Consequently, since the ultimate goal of that
project (funded by the Calif. Energy Commission) was to translate the
Commission's set of 160 DOE-2 files into EnergyPlus, I gave up on this path
and instead added the geometry of the interior walls to the DOE-2 files,
instead.
