[Equest-users] Roof Error

Pranita,

As Nick suggests, you may not lose much by just modeling a flat roof.
However, you can work with your wizard-generated roof surfaces to
correct your problem with a little practice. You will need to modify the
roof polygons. The "y" coordinates of the roof peaks of your polygons
should be the same, assuming the building width does not change along
its length. I would save a version of the model with a different name,
and modify the polygons by editing the input file.

Regards,
Bill

Hi Pranita,

Sloped roof generation in the wizards fails me more often than not.
Without corrective detailed edit work on the misaligned/missing surfaces
(time consuming), I think your options are either:
1. Create a custom roof with a simplified perimeter that the
wizards won't choke on (you can see that happening before you even look
at the 3D view), or
2. Reason whether a flat roof with an unconditioned plenum of
equivalent volume to the attic space and/or an adjusted ceiling height
where vaulted ceilings are present is an acceptable portrayal. I've
always been quick to caution that eQuest is not an appropriate program
where "aesthetic necessity" has priority over the accuracy of the
modeled behavior. For sloped-roof buildings, I use this approach more
often than not in eQuest.

I believe it was pointed out some time ago on the lists that the
wizard's inability to correctly recognize 90-degree angles and such for
the purpose of generating sloped roofs can sometimes be traced to tiny
rounding errors at the vertices that occur when the building perimeter
is not aligned and square with the x and y axis. If you are defining
your perimeter in a non-orthogonal fashion, you might find your problem
is solved by using detailed mode instead to define your exact baseline
azimuth orientation.
