Hello TRNSYS users,

This is regarding the development of a new correlation for calculating the undisturbed ground temperature. This correlation can be used in replacement of the annual average ambient temperature as a type or an equation in TRNSYS in conjunction with the ground heat exchanger and ground coupled heat pump types for more accurate simulations and modeling in this field.

A so-called "undisturbed ground temperature" is an important parameter for sizing of the ground heat exchanger (boreholes) connected to the ground source heat pump systems. Most of the time, engineers are using the annual average air ambient temperature instead of the undisturbed ground temperature for the design of the boreholes leading to significantly oversized borehole and therefore the additional initial cost of the project.
Based on measured data for seventeen sites covering a wide range of climates, a simple correlation of the undisturbed ground temperature has been developed as a function of the average air ambient temperature. For more details please check a scientific paper entitled "New correlations for the prediction of the undisturbed ground temperature" published in Geothermics Vol. 53 page 379-384
