Dear Alex,

The best way (currently) to supply information about your windows for use in
energy simulation programs would be to generate DOE-2 and EnergyPlus report
files from WINDOW program. One caveat is that DOE-2 report file cannot be
generated for the real window frames, but you can use average U-factor for
your actual frames and create a generic frames that can be used in DOE-2
report. That way you can circumvent this deficiency in DOE-2 functionality.
EnergyPlus report does not have this deficiency. For other simulation
programs, it is hard to say what they would need, but generally the
following is important information about a window (all included in
EnergyPlus report file):

-          Glazing

o Center of glazing system conductance

o   Center of glazing U-factor

o Convective and radiative portions of outdoor and indoor film
coefficients

o   Number of glazing layers

o Center of glazing SHGC as a function of angle of incidence, including
hemispherical

o Center of glazing T_sol as a function of angle of incidence, including
hemispherical

o Center of glazing Rf_sol as a function of angle of incidence, including
hemispherical

o Center of glazing Rb_sol as a function of angle of incidence, including
hemispherical

o Center of glazing T_vis as a function of angle of incidence, including
hemispherical

o Center of glazing Rf_vis as a function of angle of incidence, including
hemispherical

o Center of glazing Rb_vis as a function of angle of incidence, including
hemispherical

o Center of glazing Layer absorptances

o Size of the transparent area (Width and Height)

-          Frame:

o Projected framing depth for each cross-section

o   Outside projection

o   Conductance

o   Edge of glazing conductance

o   Surface absorptivity

o   Surface emissivity

It would be also helpful if detailed layer by layer properties of glazing is
supplied (i.e., solar-optical spectral properties of individual layers of
glazing, meaning solar-optical properties as a function of wavelength, each
glazing layer thickness, conductivity and two surface emissivities), gap
fill thermo-physical properties and gap widths.

Subject: [Bldg-sim] Desired Parameter Inputs for Window from Manufacturer

Hi all,

My company is looking at making available some BIM models as well as
compiling data on our windows to help energy modelers analyze our windows
and glass into buildings.

The ones that seem most obvious to me are:

*	COG U-factor
*	Full Frame U-factor
*	COG SHGC/SC (do people prefer one or are both useful?)
*	Full Frame SHGC
*	VT
*	Thickness

I feel like some software requires more detailed inputs, so I've come up
with the additional categories:

*	Visible Transmittance by color
*	Visible Reflectance Front and Back
*	Solar Transmittance
*	Solar Reflectance Front and Back
*	UV transmittance

Please feel free to add and comment on this list. Our purpose of providing
this data is to make consultants' lives easier so let me know if you think
of anything that would be helpful. Thanks for your input!

Regards,

Alex Krickx
