[Bldg-sim] ASHRAE 90.1-2004 and task lights

The appropriate section happens to be right in front of me - assuming
you have task lights defined in the construction documents (plans/specs)
being reviewed, it looks to me that your USGBC reviewer is correct, but
not telling you the whole story...

90.1-2004, Appendix G, Table G3.1, Section 6. "Lighting" (d):

"Lighting system power shall include all lighting system components
shown or provided for on the plans (including lamps and ballasts and
task and furniture-mounted fixtures)."

The following exception for multifamily dwellings and hotel/motel guest
rooms makes a distinction regarding cord + receptacle task lights:

"Exception: For... spaces in which lighting systems are connected via
receptacles and are not shown or provided for on building plans, assume
identical lighting power for the proposed and baseline building designs
in the simulations, but exclude these loads when calculating the
baseline building performance and proposed building performance."

Falling back to the glossary definition for performance (cost), that
means if you are modeling the task lights, add their wattage identically
to the baseline and proposed model LPD's to model the internal load
contributions, but then subtract the cost of the energy to operate those
fixtures from the final costs you arrive at.

In summary, you should model the task lights as internal loads, but not
the cost of operating them. That's my take anyway =),

Subject: [Bldg-sim] ASHRAE 90.1-2004 and task lights

Hello Listserv members,

I just received a question from GBCI on a LEED CI project related to
lighting power density. It was my understanding that per ASHRAE
90.1-2004 std. plugged in task lights are exempted from the overall
lighting power density calculations. However, our review came back
saying that task lights should be included in the overall calculations.
Is this true? Has the standard changed recently?

 Any input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Priya
