SimBuild Pre-Conference Workshop: IBPSA-USA presents Building Energy
Modeling
Training

The Building Energy Modeling one-day seminar has been offered by
IBPSA-USA in
more than 12 cities in North America over the last two years.

It is being offered on July 30, 2012, in two sessions prior to the
SimBuild
conference in Madison, Wisconsin. Substantial discounts are available
to
students and practicing modelers. A new segment on life cycle cost
analysis has
been added.

The main objective of the BEM Training is to improve modeling quality.

The morning session is designed for beginners and covers topics
critical to the
effective delivery of energy modeling services, including:

v ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2007 and LEED
v High performance, low energy buildings
v New and existing building modeling

The afternoon session is intermediate level and covers the following
topics:

v Modeling best practices
v Modeling tools to support best practices
v Modeling procedure for integrated design
v Life Cycle Cost Analysis (newly added**)

**This portion of the training session will teach attendees the basics
of life
cycle cost analysis theory and application. Life cycle cost analysis is
the
concept of designing projects with recognition of the costs and savings
associated with the project over all phases of this life cycle. This
includes
first costs and savings, operation and maintenance, energy savings, and
replacement/retirement. Life cycle cost analysis (LCCA) can be a
comparative
process where multiple scenarios are analyzed and weighed against one
another to
help inform the final design. LCCA can assist designers in making
decisions
ranging in scope from a single piece of equipment to an entire
building.
Effective life cycle cost analysis also includes an examination of the
qualitative benefits of a design and how these benefits compare to
their
associated costs and savings. The training will include case studies to
highlight how the LCCA process can be used to assist in design and how
LCCA
work should be structured around the typical architectural
design process.
