6 - 6.30pm Networking and drinks
6.30-7.30pm Presentations

Descriptions of Presentations:
Solar Decathlon, 2013 - Danielle Barsky ARUP
Danielle Barsky will give a presentation about the Harvest Home, a residence designed by students from The George Washington University, American University, and Catholic University. The focus will be on energy studies performed to ensure the building met design criteria.

Arup DC Projects - Nick Blanton ARUP
Nick Blanton will give a presentation about the design and simulation work completed for several local Arup projects. Specific modeling challenges will be discussed, as well as useful information for up-and-coming simulation consultants, based on experience gained from these projects.

Building Performance Benchmarking beyond Energy Star Portfolio Manager - Hyojin Kim Catholic University
Hyojin Kim will introduce new protocols on building performance measurement and benchmarking developed by ASHRAE, CIBSE, and USGBC: Performance Measurement Protocols (PMP) for Commercial Building. As the first integrated protocols on energy, water, and indoor environmental quality, the PMP is expected to be used as a tool to verify green building practice and to identify building performance-related problems, which will help diminish the observed discrepancy between predicted and actual performance of buildings. An application of the PMP will be demonstrated using a case-study building.

About the Speakers:
Danielle Barsky
Danielle is a graduate mechanical engineer at Arup. She received her Masters and Bachelors degrees in mechanical engineering from the George Washington University. Her Masters thesis research focused on small-scale vertical axis wind energy. From May 2012 to October 2013, she collaborated with Arup and Team Capitol DC on the design and construction of Harvest Home, for the 2013 Solar Decathlon competition.

Nick Blanton
Nick Blanton is a mechanical engineer at Arup. He received his Masters and Bachelors degrees in mechanical engineering from the George Washington University. Nick has over two years of experience working as an HVAC design engineer. He held a lecture position at GWU teaching parametric modeling and finite element analysis for two years.

Hyojin Kim
Dr. Hyojin Kim is an Assistant Professor of the School of Architecture and Planning at The Catholic University of America (CUA). She currently teaches in the School's Master of Science in Sustainable Design (MSSD) program, including the two core courses: Systems and Simulation I and II. Dr. Kim received her Ph.D. degree in Architecture at Texas A&M University. Prior to joining the CUA, she was a Research Engineering Associate at Energy Systems Laboratory (ESL), Texas A&M University, where she was an essential part to the ESL modeling team and assisted in the legislative responsibilities under the Texas Emissions Reduction Plan (TERP).

Dr. Kim has extensive research experience in the field of building efficiency, including building energy modeling, building energy, water, and indoor environmental quality (IEQ) performance measurement and benchmarking, energy codes and standards, measurement and verification (M&V), and thermal comfort. She developed a comprehensive instrumentation cart to collect continuous, time-series data from selected IEQ-related parameters for thermal comfort, indoor air quality, lighting, and acoustics based on the ASHRAE/CIBSE/USGBC Performance Measurement Protocols for Commercial Buildings, which was partially funded by 2010 ASHRAE Grant-in-Aid Award. She has participated in multiple research projects funded by the ASHRAE, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), the US EPA, the US Army, and Korean Ministry of Environment. She has authored over 25 peer-reviewed papers and over 40 technical reports.
