RE: [EnergyPlus_Support] Pre-processors
To respond to the question about user interfaces for EnergyPlus.
We have a software tool under development called DesignBuilder which can use
EnergyPlus and/or 3TC as the simulation engine. We will be starting a beta
testing programme in January 2003, and expect to release version 1.0 in
March 2003. The focus in the development of DesignBuilder has been on
ease-of-use and applicability at all stages of the design process.
Version 1.0 will allow access to most of the EnergyPlus fabric, ventilation
and lighting modelling capabilities, though interfaces for the heating and
cooling modelling will be more basic. A full interface for HVAC modelling
is planned for Version 2. You can find out more about DesignBuilder from
the (temporary) web site: www.designbuilder.co.uk. The trial software
download from the web site has been disabled while I sort out some licensing
issues, but as soon as these are resolved, you will be able to download a
free 30 day trial of DesignBuilder with EnergyPlus links. There is a
seamless link between the DesignBuilder data input screens and the results
screens, and so you can use it without really knowing much about EnergyPlus,
but you can also pick up the .IDF files generated by the software to modify
as you will.

Purchase price will be in the region of US$800 for the EnergyPlus link with
standard user interface.

E+ is growing (new realise will be offered soon) and although the
users group will become bigger. Up to now there is the IDFEditor
available to produce idf-files.
Are there users working on new pre-processors to make the input in E+
much more comfortable? I think how to get e.g. the coordinates of a
complex building into it the idf-file (without using BSPro do make an
idf-file from a dxf-file), using libraries for the wall construction,
maybe also for the windows, etc. May such a pre-processor be free of
charge? If no, what will it cost? Is it possible to test it for a few
days?
If anybody is working on such a project or knows such a facility I
would be very grateful.
