EnergyPlus Documentation is searchable.  Open EPlusMainMenu.idf and 
press the "search" button.

Search for ReadVars

page numbers 1066ff, (page 1099 ff of IDF) of the IORef talk about 
making the rvi file that will help you get around the 255 limit or 
you can put an argument on the command line -- which is also discussed there.
