If you are getting the error:
    ** Severe  ** GetAirflowNetworkInput: 
AirflowNetwork:Multizone:Surface object, Surface=<surfacename>
    **   ~~~   ** ..Zone for outside surface must be defined in a 
AirflowNetwork:MultiZone:Zone object.  Could not find Zone=<zonename>

That may have been fixed in V1.4 with this:
Folder: EnergyPlus
CR Number: 7052
Type: Defect
Addressed In: 06.07.27 V1.4.0.011
Synopsis for Users: Input files using shading surfaces (detached or 
attached) and AirflowNetwork options would have fatal errors.

If you have shading surfaces, you can remove them if you are still 
running V1.3 (but then you won't have their effect) or move to V1.4
