Did you look at the Auxiliary programs document? In there, we talk 
quite a bit about various weather data sets and formats.  There's 
been a good set of articles in the literature about what is the 
proper kinds of weather data for energy simulation as well.

Likewise, the website talks about weather data sources:
http://www.eere.energy.gov/buildings/energyplus/weatherdata_sources.html

EPW files are no more, no less than the data that feeds it.  This 
could be typical years that are usually used for energy simulations 
or it could be a real time data that might be used for a specific purpose.
