Astrid,

The EnergyPlus detailed daylighting calculcations are described in 
detail in the EnergyPlus Engineering Reference portion of the included 
documentation, under Daylighting and Window Calculations.  The 
calculations are very similar to those used in DOE-2, with some 
enhancements.  These calculations have been previously described and 
validated.  Papers describing the DOE-2 implementation, limitations, and 
validation can be found at the URLs below, including validation against 
scale models and other daylighting analysis software.
