I think you are correct regarding it's capability (only planar surfaces)

However, DesignBuilder, a commercial front end for E+, composes curve
approximations using multiple planes. There's a lot of flexibility in
that feature and should give you everything needed for most
geometries. It's also possible that the Sketchup plugin for E+ can do
the same.
