My comment on: From: Fred Buhl <wfbuhl@xxxxxxx> Subject: Re: [EnergyPlus_ To: EnergyPlus_Support@ Date: Thursday, June 18, 2009, 3:05 PM That's right. To do a zone sizing run only, use SimulationControl, Yes, !- Do Zone Sizing Calculation No, !- Do System Sizing Calculation No, !- Do Plant Sizing Calculation No, !- Run Simulation for Sizing Periods No; !- Run Simulation for Weather File Run Periods For input, you will need at least thermostatically controlled zones - ZoneControl: Thermostat and its associated objects and schedules. Then look at the file with a name that ends Zsz.csv. That will show your zone loads. If your zone are not controlled, there will be no load. Fred Buhl The above is correct.
However, the person who posed the question may have problems in filling in the fields of an object and in generating a schedules correctly. Building description may also be incorrect, when it is exported from another software. Therefore, I suggest that the zone sizing should not be the first simulation run on a new IDF file.
It is better to run the DesignDay simulation first without any equipment or schedule to see that the building surface entries are complete.
Even with the incorrect objects, Run Simulation for Sizing Periods:DesignDay provide more information on the errors in the IDF file.
For example, if the exterior wall is defined as no-sun, no-wind, or pointing in the wrong direction, the zone surfaces are not closed, etc. , the result can be un-predictable and many warnings will be given in the error file.
The DesignDay simulation will provide the input outdoor environment temperature, and output the zone temperatures and many surface information on the building.
The room at the center and those with windows will have different temperature values.
Controls can be pasted in from an example file or added zone by zone, and watch the objects are being accepted by the simulation. More zone equipment such as lights, electrical equipment, etc. can be added to verify that the schedules are working. (Weekday, Holidays, etc. Power used per zone at different time.)
The DesignDay simulation provides results for two days, one for Winter and one for Summer. As more controlling schedules are added, there would be more output data, but can still be reasonably controlled..
After the simulation is successful, the objects used can be copied to the other zones by simply changing the zone name. Minor adjustment can be made to individual zone object to meet special requirements.
When all seems to be running, the meters, tables, etc. can be added and the full year weather simulation can then be sleeted to run with confidence.
Full weather simulation without the DesignDay sizing will require the Zone, Systm and plant objects, if they are used in the IDF.
Run Simulation for Sizing Periods using DesignDay data, without selecting the zone sizing calculation, will produce a Zsc.csv file, when there are controls to change the zone demand. When there is no zone control, the building surface heat transfer calculation is still carried out and room temperature, etc. are available as output variables.
