GARD holds classes occasionally:  http://www.gard.com/training.htm.  Loisos + Ubbelohde (www.coolshadow.com) does trainings on an as-requested basis on the west coast.  We (L+U) plan to roll out a series of public trainings in late-2010.

I think Liam is an extraordinarily quick study.  Good for him!

My own experience is more like a month (~20-24 days) of intense study, experimentation, and posting a lot of questions.  After that, things smoothed out a bit but there was still a lot of learning occurring.

p.s., To be fair, I had no prior experience with ANY modeling tool of the same caliber.  It also may have something to do with being a very picky HVAC engineer and in middle age as opposed to twenty-something?

From my personal experience, EnergyPlus was pretty quick to pick up. I'd say it took me about 7-10 days to become completely familiar with defining zones, surfaces, daylighting, operations, etc. The extensive documentation and openness via IDF editor help a LOT. I recommend using the SketchUP plug in frequently to confirm geometry.

Defining explicit HVAC, if you don't want a built-in system, has a steeper learning curve (at least, for me).
