Zero Energy Buildings will offer students the essential knowledge they need to understand what it means to create buildings that operate on zero net energy, off grid, and/or carbon neutral. We will discuss and practice the modeling tools that designers, engineers and civilians need to predict building energy use. We will learn from practicing professionals about many of the renewable energy sources on the market like wind and photovoltaic panels, how to determine the size and cost of the generator required to offset building energy use, and the role of local, state and federal incentives in promoting renewables. Through site visits, presentation examples, guest lectures and a case study project, students will learn about the categories of building energy demand and cost, techniques for reducing that demand in each area, and we will produce a cost-effective plan for making a case study Zero Energy Building.

David Scheer has extensive experience consulting as a design performance and LEED energy modeler for projects worldwide. He has also worked in many areas of sustainable design and master planning, including research in green infrastructure planning and stormwater management for the City of Homer, green subdivision layout and civil design, and he been a residential and commercial contractor for nearly 20 years. David has designed and built a number of residential projects focusing on energy efficiency, and has designed and installed building performance monitoring and automation systems. Currently he is involved daily with energy modeling, automation, research and design on buildings worldwide, collaborating closely with designers, MEPs and contractors to assure implementation of the modeled strategies.
