Suggest reading and trying out the Getting Started guide.  (If you install in the default location: )    Start, Progarms, EnergyPlus V6-0, EnergyPlus Main Documentation Menu.  Then click on Getting Started.  It contains examples and guidance on how to start modeling with EnergyPlus. 

 

Also -- take a look at the example files  (C:\EnergyPlusV6-0-0\ExampleFiles).  More than 300 examples of using EnergyPlus with various features.  There's also a link from the EnergyPlus menu to a spreadsheet (Example Files Summary Spreadsheet) which describes each example file.
