I am not entirely sure that this is the source of your issue, but it sounds as if you double-clicked the energyplus engine (ENERGYPLUS.EXE) 

Instead try to open the provided interface (EP-Launch.exe) and browse to the desired input data file (.idf) and associated energyplus weather file (.epw)
