[EnergyPlus_Support] Number of Branches on Loops - are splitters/mixers necessary

Hi,

I have seen in some of the example files supply or demand branchlists with three branches, something that looks like this:

[inlet branch] --> [main branch] --> [outlet branch]

What is the purpose of doing this?  This requires the creation of a splitter and mixer, when the flow is actually linear.  The same alignment of components can be achieved with only one branch.  Is there any functional difference between having one branch and the above configuration?

Thanks,
