RE: [EnergyPlus_Support] version and results

Dear all,

I don't think people will stop asking such questions, because anyone who is 'new' to building simulation may expect E+ to be like normal software, i.e. albeit lacking certain functions, an older version should nevertheless produce same results as the latest version. This is certainly not the case for E+, or any other building simulation tools (I guess) that are ongoing continuous core development. To keep reminding users, new or seasoned alike, of this fact may be useful, so we don't take simulation results for granted - there is always uncertainty in there, and (sometimes large) part of it comes from the simulation software itself.

Ivan and I have put together a jEPlus project containing 28 example models from the E+ package. You can use the set to compare differences between E+ versions. More details can be found on this page: http://www.iesd.dmu.ac.uk/~jeplus/wiki/doku.php?id=download:examples <http://www.iesd.dmu.ac.uk/~jeplus/wiki/doku.php?id=download:examples> . By the way, it can also be used for comparing processor speed, which I am always interested in. The simulation result you can find on the page is done on an i7 620M, using single thread. Average simulation time for the 224 cases (28 models x 8 weathers) is 32.4s, 36.5s and 35.1s for v7.0, 7.1 and 7.2, respectively. See if your computer can beat mine :-)

Regarding to people looking for older versions of E+, I think there are valid reasons. We started using E+ since v2.2, and still have some models from that version but haven't been touched since. If we didn't keep an archive of past E+ versions, we may never be able to use those models again. The second reason is converting models can be quite a pain, especially when one has many files to upgrade. The IDFVersionUpdater is very helpful to some extend. But it requires version information present in each model file, which is not the case for our ##include parts... Overall, having some backward compatibly in E+ is really very much desirable, although it is not an easy thing to do for the developers, I am sure.

Best,

To elaborate....

This topic has been addressed MANY times! It is also fairly common for participants who are new to this forum to ask questions which have been addressed in detail in the past. Although I know it is sometimes difficult to search the forum past posts for a particular topic, that is probably a very good idea if you are new to EnergyPlus or this forum. You will often find a wealth of information faster than waiting for someone to post a response!

The thousands of pages of EnergyPlus Help files are also a rich source of information.

Out of respect and courtesy to the many users of the forum, as well as for your own benefit, make sure that you have done some research prior to posting the question, and also make sure your question is specific. The idea behind the forum is for diverse people to help each other. Because they are normally busy earning their living or pursuing an advanced degree, it is much less likely that they will respond to a question that is obviously not well-researched or explained.

I don't think you can attach files or include images (e.g. diagrams or graphs) via the Yahoo portal, but both can be done in an email sent to EnergyPlus_Support@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. Images are often VERY helpful for someone unfamiliar with your particular model to understand what you are saying.

Finally, and in case my tone is no t clear, I think that all questions are welcome, but they should be posted after some thought and investigation on your own.

All-

Please stop wasting the developers time with these requests for old versions and just use the update program- then if you notice something out of place with the updated version you can report it to the help desk. The issue is that they can not support older versions because they have moved on by advancing the code and fixing problems. If someone wants to create a repository of old versions and provide support I am sure that the E+ team would grant them a distribution licence-- so anyone want to spend time on vintage versions and support please step forth..

Simply stated, no.

You've got several changes since V6.0.0.023 to V6.0.0.037 to V7.0.0.036 to V7.1.0.012 to V7.2.0.006 and there WILL be differences.

Sometimes they will be large. In V7.0, there was a major rewrite of the plant code, for example.

should the same simulation, ran with different versions of E+ (6 and 7.1), give the same results?
