RE: [EnergyPlus_Support] Re: Climate Zone Question

In the US, the climate zone (in 90.1/169) assigned to particular counties overrides the calculations.  For the rest of the world, the calculated climate zone is correct.   The current climate zone data are calculated based on data from an older period of record (1961-1990) and do occasionally vary from the weather files (EPWs).

For the update proposed for standard 169 (and 90.1), it is calculated from data for a newer period of record (generally 1982 to 2006).  These long-term data are the same data in the update proposed for standard 169 as the 2009 ASHRAE Fundamentals, Chapter 14, Climatic Design Conditions.

Because the weather file can vary from the longer-term period of record, it is more accurate to find the climate zone for a location from the standard rather from the calculated one in the EPW Stat files.  As it says in the Stat file:

‘ **Note that the ASHRAE classification [climate zone] shown here is derived algorithmically from the source weather data. It may not be indicative of the long term climate for this location.’

Carefull! The stat file is auto-generated based on the weather data file and does sometimes through out a false climate zone. Also, even if you calculated it from the formula in ASHRAE 90.1, the ruling climate zone will be the listed one.

This has been my painful experience.
