I am using the openstudio sdk and c# to build the model, so my experience might be a bit different and complicated. I was modeling shades as linked to zones, and the sdk is automatically assigning the closest surface of that zone to the shading device. I believe there is a small bug here and the surface is not correctly mapped. So the window that the shading is attached to is not influenced by the device. I could correct this problem by instantiating a building shading or a site shading. Hope this helps others who are going through the same difficulty....
