Job Description

The Building Energy Regulatory Analysis Group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is currently seeking a Building Energy Research Engineer. This position involves using building simulation tools to model and conduct simulations of building energy systems for high-efficiency residential and commercial buildings and for innovative technologies.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
This position will be assisting project teams with building simulation analysis for building energy codes and standards development as well as high performance building energy analysis. EnergyPlus analysis for HVAC and other commercial equipment and appliances, as well as building energy simulation analysis will be an expectation of this position. Additionally, this position may involve large scale building energy simulation analysis using Perl and R software languages. The project may involve research on energy efficiency, sustainable design practices, and carbon management strategies.
- Independently completes recurring assignments.
- Exercises limited judgment on work details.
- Makes preliminary selections and adaptations of technical alternatives.


Minimum Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree with 2+ yearsâ?? experience or a Master's degree with 0-2 yearsâ?? experience or a PhD. is required
- Expected to contribute professionally, building a professional reputation for technical expertise.
- Fully applying and interpreting standard theories, principles, methods, tools and technologies.
- Good English writing skills are required.
- Strong interpersonal skills required.


Preferred Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree in Architecture Engineering, Mechanical Engineer, Building Sciences or related with 5+ yearsâ?? experience or a Master's degree with 3+ yearsâ?? experience or a PhD with at least 1 year experience. A PhD is preferred.
- Expected to contribute professionally, building a professional reputation for technical expertise.
- Fully applying and interpreting standard theories, principles, methods, tools and technologies.
- Good English writing skills are required.
- Strong interpersonal skills required.
- Other preferred qualifications include past experience securing project funding, working with or leading technical teams, and the ability to manage research projects.

Educational requirements, certifications/licensures, subject matter expertise, and experience that exceed the Performance Level Indicators:
- Previous experience in using building simulation tools such as EnergyPlus is preferred. Experience with other computer software languages a plus.
- Coursework in energy efficiency, energy-related systems, energy metering technology, energy systems analysis and modeling, building energy simulations, business, economics, water conservation, sustainable development/design, or environmental science is preferred.
