Start by reading the Getting Started guide. It probably came with the installation but can also be downloaded from the EnergyPlus web site. (Look under documentation.) It describes some basic modeling techniques. Look at example input files... there are more than 400 with specific types of systems that are demonstrated. Pick one that has familiar systems of configuration .... use the tools .... IDFeditor, EP-Launch, open files in text editors.
