EnergyPlus uses Heat Balances, at inner surface, outer surface, for well-mixed indoor air. Is that your 'traditional method"?
Heat balance is done at each time step, could be several times, because of the dynamics/changes of temperatures etc
i have used EnergyPlus LowTempertureRadiant:VariableFlow object for Cooling, using 'high temperature' 25C water
i have also used the same object for low temperature (20C) heating
The simulated indoor air temperatures are reasonable.
i am conducting experiments for low temperature heating in Melbourne and high temperature cooling in Malaysia
So far, high temperature cooling in Malaysia has resulted in condensation on the surfaces of the hydronic tubing, as predicted by EnergyPlus
