[Equest-users] Active Chilled Beam savings?

To build on what Alan said below, another factor to consider is your heat load in the space. If you have a lab minimum ventilation requirement of 6ACH, with an equipment heat gain of 10w/ft2 in addition to lights, people and solar loads (not uncommon) you are likely going to be running the supply air at close to 11-12 ACH with an all-air system.

If your equipment load is lower – let’s say 3w/ft2, then your likely going to see the same volume of air supplied, and you probably will not see the fan energy reduction. There is a slight increase in static pressure at the DOAS to supply the air. The chilled beams themselves shouldn’t have any fan energy usage.

Myself and many others have modeled these types of systems, both under eQuest as well as Energyplus. If you aren’t showing fan savings you may want to verify that in fact you are able to specify smaller HP motors at the DOAU due to the decrease in overall volume flow rates vs standard air recirculation systems. If you system design does show a lower HP supply fan at the unit then there may indeed be a modeling error on the runtime of the fans or something else. It is not easy to say without more detail.

Has anyone successfully shown energy savings due to an Active Chilled Beam airside system, as compared to a series VAV or other baseline? I haven't been able to model the fan (or any system) energy savings that several white papers claim. The last sim list discussion of this was in 2006 anything new?
