[Equest-users] Weather File for Energy Model Calibration

Brian
Thank you for your input. Once weather file was set up from January to December and checked for the file size, my energy model simulation with the custom weather file worked. One more thing though, my custom weather file doesn't have any cloud amount information, but I went through the help files in the equest software and found this

"Solar radiation values are generated from a clear sky model using the specified MONTH and DAY for calculating solar position. The clear sky values are then modified by the CLOUD-AMOUNT. The Loads portion of is then run with a 1 day run period for each design day. The resulting peak cooling load (for a cooling design day) and peak heating load (for a heating design day) is used to size HVAC equipment."

So, I am thinking its ok to have all cloud amt information zero, as I am not sizing the HVAC but calibrating the model for MV for LEED. Am I wrong??

Thank you

Hi Sudheera,

The answer to your 1st question is the weather does need to be oriented Jan to Dec. I do not, however see a problem having the Jan - Jul 2011 weather preceed the Aug-Dec 2010. Annual energy should be correct and will line up with the corresponding weather.

Can't help with the 2nd issue.

Hi Folks
Happy New year. Hope everyone had wonderful holidays.
I am in a process to get a custom weather file for energy model calibration for the MV process for LEED. I have a custom weather file for the time span August 1st 2010 to July 31st 2011 and ran my energy model and getting weather file error. I have some questions regarding the properties of the weather file,

1. Does the weather file need to start from Jan to Dec or can be a full year with starting and ending months different (in my case starting Aug 2010 to July 2011)?

2. The .bin weather file, from the DOE website, size is 146kb and my custom .bin weather file size is 140kb, does the file size matter and how?

When I run energy model simulation with the custom .bin file, the simulations runs till dec 17th and then fails and gives me a weather file error, I checked the .csv file I received with my custom file and ensured that data is present for all days.
Any guidance or input is greatly appreciated,

Thank you
Sudheera Sivakumar, EIT, LEED AP(BD +C).
