[Equest-users] Wind Energy (Quick) Modeling Tool

HOMER is still around but the rights were transferred to the original developers. The legacy version is still available as a free download from homerenergy.com, however, the most recent version is available via a subscription service, I believe.

I also haven't used it for a while, but for a former employer used it on a number of Federal projects. Two actually got constructed under an energy savings performance contract. One for the Navy at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where we installed (4) 950 kW turbines and the other at a Federal prison in West Texas where we installed a 100 kW turbine. HOMER is very good at evaluating hybrid plants, such as remote island locations with diesel generators + wind+ flow battery storage which can allow a very high wind penetration level.

RETscreen is a good tool. Homer used to be a good free tool put out by NREL, but I've not used it for years. Not sure if its still around.

One caution with wind - unlike solar, the resource in urban areas can vary drastically by site depending on your urban fabric and topography. I would check wunderground for a weather station close to your site and compare wind data from that to what RETscreen is assuming.

Ari,

Google RETscreen. It contains a variety of renewable energy screening tools and is available for free download from the Canadian equivalent of our Dept. of Energy. I've found the user interface easy to use and the help screens are very useful.

I've used it for years going back to when each tool was a separate macro driven Excel file. Now everything is compiled into one program. If for some reason you don't like the current version 4.x, let me know as the v. 3.0 separate spreadsheet is probably easier and quicker to use and I can email it to you.

Good luck.

Hi all,

Not really an eQUEST question, but is anyone aware of a quick tool for estimating wind energy viability/production? I'm imagining something analogous to PVWatts for solar - a back-of-the-envelope-type calculator based on geographic location and basic system parameters.

Thanks,
Ari
