So, regarding the initial inquiry, what you describe should be possible.  Are 
you getting flow in the system?  If not, that needs to be resolved first.  The 
DHW object should be on the demand side of its loop and should force flow in 
that loop (there must be a pump in that loop as well - is there?).  If this 
doesn't help you figure it out, please upload the file.
