Greg,

It probably depends on what type of lab building it is. If the labs are
going to be controlled by space conditions and don't have any unusual
exhaust requirements, you can probably do this in the systems tab. As you
define your air handling system, click the check box for return fan
(return/exhaust) and define it as variable speed. You'll need to define the
supply fan as variable speed also. If it is a 100% outside air system, make
sure you check the box for min. O.A. and input 100%.

This could get a little trickier if you have a lab with fume hoods and VAV
sash controllers. In this instance, you might have to interview or observe
the occupants to get an idea of the typical operation of the hoods and sash
positions. In this instance you can probably define the air handling system
as 100% outdoor air and variable volume reheat with the variable speed
return/exhaust fan. Based on the interview or observations, it's probably
possible to come up with an hourly fraction schedule to apply to outdoor
air. If the sashes are generally closed, make sure you still maintain a
negative pressure in relation to the corridor outside. If I remember
correctly, the fraction schedule should override the fan operating on/off
schedule and vary the air quantity and fan kW.

Subject: [BLDG-SIM] DOE2.1E variable speed exhaust fans

I am working on an DOE2 energy analysis (using Visual DOE 3.1) for a
laboratory building.
I'm relatively new to DOE2 and was wondering if anyone knew
of a method to model variable speed exhaust fans?
Thanks.

Greg Schlegel
