That's a little low. 

Try $7 - $10 w/o batteries and $10 to $15 w/batteries.

Ramana,
 
a rule of thumb would be $6-$10 per installed watt (includes wiring, inverters, etc, no batteries, net capacity returned to grid).  To get payback you would need to compare the cost of electricity in the region.

Any pointers to studies on how long it takes for photovoltaics to payback for the first cost (with or without balance of the system)?

I understand there are many variables involved and there are no straight answers, but any information regarding one or more than climatic region/building types will be helpful.
