[Bldg-sim] 90.1 Occupancy

Hi Robert!

If you mean scheduling for lighting and/or occupancy, 90.1 does not strictly require anything. You can use whatever makes sense for the building so long as you are matching between baseline and proposed.

That said, if you are uncomfortable developing your own scheduling and/or are looking for guidance, ASHRAE has published out schedules of this nature that the 90.1 User's manual references. They are a series of tables from 90.1-1989 for different building occupancy types (School/Warehouse/etc). None of these building types is "4-story dorm," but you could likely reference "Hotel" and/or "health/institutional." If you don't have 90.1-1989 handy on your shelves, I know these schedules are freely available incorporated as part of the Washington State Energy Code (2009), and possibly other places.

It's probably worth mentioning the mechanical designer (where applicable) is probably the most defensible source for any project-specific scheduling. I don't always feel it's a requirement, but getting the mechanical designer's input in writing for any scheduling you're unsure of is always a safe bet.

It's also worth mentioning the schedules generated in a weighted occupancy fashion by eQuest (which I think you're referencing) have in my experience gone largely unchallenged over many LEED projects. The results are often quite reasonable when you do not have anything more specific to reference. If I recall correctly some time ago, discussions across one of these mailing lists revealed the schedules "under the hood" used for each occupancy type are in fact referencing ASHRAE-based sources/research.

Regards,

~Nick

Subject: [Bldg-sim] 90.1 Occupancy

Does anybody know off the top what the ASHRAE 90.1 Lighting Occupancy is for High/Mid (four story) Residential Apartment/Dorm (private baths)??????

I'm using "Building Area Multi-Family" now, but I'm not sure that's right, and I can't find anything better.

Hoping for a better answer....

Thanks!
