Ian,

This is a topic I've worked on for years (estimating component loads for the
building fabric and processes).   It's not an easy task if you're aiming for
an exact distribution that adds up to the building totals.  I've attempted
different methods, none of which worked completely for the reasons that you
mentioned - transient "pick-up" loads when the thermostat changes and loads
(or rather heat flows) when the building is floating. The best of the bunch
was to store the loads during the floating hours and then allocate them to
whichever mode appeared next, either heating or cooling, the logic being
that these cumulated loads appear as "pick-up" loads on either the heating
or cooling equipment when they have to turn on.

I used this approach to estimate component loads for commercial buildings.
For residential buildings, since run times were not a problem, I just did
sensitivity parametrics where I eliminated that component and looked at the
difference in loads.  That method, of course, also had its problems in
moderate climates, but was the simplest.

of these hours into my cooling load.  This is just a rough estimate.  I am
wondering if there is a set benchmark or what most energy pluser's due for
breaking up the cooling and heating loads.
