DO you have Acrobat Reader V5 or above?  That is needed for these files.

And to do indexed searches, you will need Acrobat Reader 6.

Same would be true if you downloaded them from the EnergyPlus Web site 
(www.energyplus.gov)  -- they are all loaded there as well though do not 
have the Main Menu.
