I can also share my experiences with teaching EnergyPlus to architecture 
students here at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  I use 
EnergyPlus at both the undergraduate and graduate level.  At the 
undergraduate level, EnergyPlus is simply a tool that students use to 
understand the effect of basic design decisions, alternatives, thermal 
mass, annual calculations, etc.  At the graduate level, I have taught 
EnergyPlus to graduate students.  We started out the semester teaching them 
how to use the program and they were then responsible for using the program 
to model their studio design projects, running various alternatives to 
analyze their different design ideas.  Most of these students do not have 
any significant background in heat transfer or thermodynamics, but they are 
able to develop at least a basic working knowledge of the program and use it.

As Linda pointed out, there is a curriculum designed to teach EnergyPlus 
over an entire semester that can be customized for specific instructor needs.
