RE: [EnergyPlus_Support] E+ vs. DesignBuilder

Desiree,

DesignBuilder is "equally competent" for the project you mentioned and you
can use it independently for this purpose. You can use Component blocks in
DesignBuilder to simulate the shading effect that surrounding objects
(including trees) have on a building. The shading effect can be set to full
obscuration by setting the transmittance to 0.0 or can be used to attenuate
solar flux by setting the transmittance to a value between 0.0 and 1.0. The
component block transmittance schedule defines any time varying
transmittance of the component block surfaces. By default, the component
block is fully opaque for the whole year and one can assign the
transmittance schedule value between 0 and 1 to, say represent the deciduous
trees. .The shading effect is cumulative so that the solar flux incident
upon a building facade will be attenuated by each successive shading object
located on a path between the facade and the sun position. Once you are done
with simulation you can also export 3D dxf model and use software like
SketchUp to draw the real trees for visualization..

Hope it helps..

Mahabir

Subject: [EnergyPlus_Support] E+ vs. DesignBuilder

Greetings E+ Group,

I am looking to simulate different types of buildings primarily
to 'measure' energy use of the bldg. with, and then without, trees -
looking at how the trees directly affect consumption. How does
EnergyPlus improve upon DesignBuilder in this regard (if at all)? Are
they both equally competent for my purpose or do they differ in some
way?

What is the best way to utilize DesignBuilder and EnergyPlus? Is
DesignBuilder simply a 'face' for EnergyPlus calculations or does
EnergyPlus do more?

Thanks for your feedback!
