 I am not sure I understand exactly what you mean by "temperature 
distribution."  Each surface in EnergyPlus (Surface:HeatTransfer:*) is modeled 
with 1-d heat transfer with a uniform temperatures over the entire surface.  
Yes, you can model a thermal zone in EnergyPlus that is not fully enclosed, 
even with a single surface.  You will get warnings that there are less than 6 
surfaces, but it should be a reasonable model.  However, with only one surface, 
you ignore radiant heat transfer between the surface of interest and other 
surface which would normally be present.
