Re: [EnergyPlus_Support] how to input the width of strip of under slab insulation

Wang Lei

In the input file, there is also a section for slab and soil properties. If you have insulation under the entire slab, there may be a way to add the effects of the insulation into this area, instead of using 'strip horizontal insulation'. If you could combine the properties for the two layers of 'slab' and 'insulation' into a set of 'effective properties', this may give good enough results.

If you choose to try this effective property method, combining the properties may be a little funny if you haven't done it before. In the next few steps, I will use the term 1 to mean slab, and 2 to mean insulation.

For the conductivity, since the materials are in series, and we are talking about conductance and not resistance, the effective conductivity will be k_eff=[ ( 1/k_1 ) + ( 1/k_2 ) ] ^ -1

For the other properties, density and specific heat, it would require a bit more work. The specific heat * density * thickness is a specific heat storage term per unit of area. This storage would be added up for the set of layers, but then pulling that down into a single specific heat term may require an average density, or something more in depth. I would think about how important the storage effects of the insulation will be in the overall simulation, compared to the storage in the slab and ground. Modifying the conductivity in this way should accomplish the resistance effects anyway.

Let me know what you think, and also, to other members of the support group, if you see any problems with what I discussed, I would really be glad to hear corrections or thoughts,

Edwin Lee

Thank you very much for your reply I think you are right, the width is the value from the perimeter of the use to interior. If I want all the slab to be insulated,the width value should be half of the slab length,but there aren't slab length field in the input file,there only is a ratio of Area/perimeter field.So I think there should be a slab length field, or there are default length in the calculated program.

I believe this will simulate 0.61m along the entire perimeter of the house. I think this will place the outer edge of the insulation at the very perimeter of the house, then 0.61m toward the interior of the plan area. I hope this helps. I am not sure if you have looked at the documentation. If not, check out the AuxillaryPrograms.pdf within the 'documentation' subfolder of the main install folder. On page 81 of the pdf there is a nice drawing of the insulation configuration.
Good Luck

Dear Edwin You are right, I can input the width in that field, but I don't know which value I should Input. In your example, the value is 0.61m. This value means which region is insulated ? I don't know how to define the width value? Could you tell me? Thanks very much

I think the width is there, in the insulation section. Here's what one of my previous files looks like:
!- =========== ALL OBJECTS IN CLASS: INSULATION ===========
Insulation,
1.056, !- RINS: R value of under slab insulation {m2-K/W}
0.61, !- DINS: Width of strip of under slab insulation {m}
0, !- RVINS: R value of vertical insulation {m2-K/W}
0, !- ZVINS: Depth of vertical insulation {m}
0; !- IVINS: Flag: Is there vertical insulation
This is for 2 feet of horizontal insulation around the perimeter.

Subject: [EnergyPlus_Support] how to input the width of strip of under slab insulation
Dear all
I'm using the slab program to calculate the ground temperature. when I inputs the vaule of the width of strip of under slab insulation, I doesn't know how to input the width of under slab insulation.
My studing model is low floor radiator heating system, the whole under floor is insulated.
There only are SlABDEPTH(Thickness of slab on grade),CLEARANGE( Distance from edge of slab to domain edge),ZCLEARANGE( Depth of range below slab),pRatio( The area to perimeter ratio for this slab ) objects in the input file.
There aren't the width and leght of slab in this input file.
So I doesn't know how to input the width of strip of under slab insulation
Thanks for you attention
