Brent answered question 1, and Rob answered question 2, so I will answer 
question 3 . . .

The version 2.1 Getting Started manual has been reconfigured and now includes 
two tutorial examples to cover some basics of running EnergyPlus and adding 
Compact HVAC system descriptions.  

And many of the interfaces and other utilities are free or offer free demo 
versions which can be a helpful way to get familiar with inputs.
