Excel is not a good choice to open an IDF file.  The format of the 
IDF files is precise and Excel may not preserve the fields 
properly.  Use Wordpad if you don't have another editor.

You could also look into using EPMacro that comes with EnergyPlus if 
you are parameterizing single values.
