Got it, thanks for that. 

I didn't know that I won't be able to open the file with IDF editor 
after doing this "notepad" extension. This initiates an additional 
question:

I am modelling the geometry and the HVAC configuration through DB. 
However, occupancy and lighting gains will have to be input through E+ 
due to floors being sloped in some areas. Given that I won't have 
access to the idf file through the IDF editor, I won't be able to input 
occupancy and lighting gains, unless I do it in Notepad. 

Is there an easier way of doing it?
