RE: [EnergyPlus_Support] Re: How to run the ReadVars ESO?

Thanks, Linda

For your quick response.

I was not thinking of the wildcard in the RVI.  I remember seeing  the format you mentioned in the earlier version RVI file and had some other problems.

What I meant was the actual request in the IDF file itself.

I had one IDF file which only asked for one output item :
     Output:Variable,*,Outdoor Dry bulb,Timestep;

I was expecting to see this in the  .csv file, but was expected to see all the other variables available in the  .eso file.  When I looked at the  .eso file only that one item was available.

So, I had to add more   variable request objects in the IDF to get the data into the .eso file for post processing.

I know that the names are available in the IDFeditor pull down menu..

I realize that the eso file size will be very big, if a wild card is used.  May be the wild cat by default is not a good idea to produce a very large ESO file all the time..

This is not really important, as it only need to be done once for a new project.
=========================
Right now there is also a mismatch between the name format difference between  the RDD file and the ESO file header, when used in the RVI file.   The format

      Output:Variable,*,  variable name, timesteps;

when used  in the RVI  file does not always work.  When this is flagged in the audit file, and I had to look up the  ESO file to get the exact name format.

I noticed that in the current version, the variable name by itself (one name  field, without the *, zone, etc.) in the RVI file would give all the data of the same name for all zones.

No action is required for this item.

There is limited wildcarding available for producing report variables.

(basic answer to your question is no).

I think Eleni has figured out a bit and how to get the > 250 vars into a csv file.  We want to put some advanced topics into the apps guides for next release that would concern running ReadVars more than once after a simulation to get specific reporting into different csv files.

Anyway, the limited wildcarding would be something along the lines of:

Output:Variable,*,Lights*,monthly;

"should" give:

Zone,Average,Lights Electric Power [W]
Zone,Sum,Lights Radiant Heat Gain [J]
Zone,Sum,Lights Visible Heat Gain [J]
Zone,Sum,Lights Convective Heat Gain [J]
Zone,Sum,Lights Return Air Heat Gain [J]
Zone,Sum,Lights Total Heat Gain [J]
Zone,Sum,Lights Electric Consumption [J]

or Zone* should give (into the eso file) all output variables starting with the word Zone.

I say should because I haven't looked at it in a while.

Hi, Linda

I have a question related to this topic.

I know where to change the 250 column limit.

I am a little uncertain on how to make sure that the data are in the .eso file.

When I did not enter all the  Report variables I need in the IDF file and did not supply the RVI file, the .ESO file did not have all the variables generated in the simulation.

I must request for all the variables I need in the IDF file.  Then I can select a group of what I want using the post processsor.

The question is:  "Is there a command to make all the variables generated in a simulation automatically available in the .eso file without listing all the names in the IDF."

LIke
Output:Table:SummaryReports,
    AllSummary ;              !- Report 1 Name

I tried " Output:Variable,*, *,hourly; " , and it did not work.

Pasting the IDF format  .rdd file into the  .RVI file of the same file name as the IDF file during simulation also did not work well.
==================
I will guide Eleni through his problem, if he will provide more specific questions, or attach his .RVI file, and any new batch files he has added.

I have seen the DOS screen flashes and disappeared.  The problem is due to Microsoft changing the way to run DOS applications.

Did you try the EP-Launch option to increase the limit of variables that go into the csv files?

Yes, I can help but it may be worthwhile to explore other options first.
