Ecotect is definitely compatible, but it’s really
best for just exporting the building geometry. It’s easiest to
assign materials, etc. in the IDF editor.
It’s true that Ecotect exports an old version –
Ecotect v5.6 exports E+ v 2.2 – but, yes, you can use the E+ Convert
utility to change this to E+ v4.0.

Last we heard Ecotect exported a really old version of the EnergyPlus input
file.
You could, of course, then use the EnergyPlus transition programs to bring it
up to whatever version you are running.
